Motherhood: Real Talk!

Becoming a mother is one of the most wonderful things a woman can do, but creating a human and raising it is by no means a walk in the park - as a team of predominantly working moms, we know just how hard it can be! We all have those days when nothing seems to be going right and your little one just won’t play ball, and although you wouldn’t have it any other way, sometimes it’s nice to know you’re not alone. So with Mother’s Day just around the corner, we all grouped together to share some of our biggest parenting faux pas and embarrassing moments because mama you’re definitely not the only one and trust us on this one… you’re still nailing it no matter what!

  • Megan Verney (soon to be mama!), Head of Marketing:

"As my rapidly growing tummy expands it’s such an incredible reminder that I have an actual tiny human growing inside me. I have been able to continue doing the things I love while pregnant without too much grunting and effort exerted, however as I have learnt there are a few things that are a not-so-heart-warming reminder of my tiny human. Wind. In public places. Fortunately, I have a sense of humour and find this pretty funny, however it can be slightly awkward in a silent room of other women trying to find their inner calm mid Pilates class. Pretty sure this is common place, right?!”

  • Jacqueline Waggett, Founder and Managing Director:

“Taking the lid off a baby bottle on an airplane with pre-expressed breast milk and it squirting over the seat behind and covering the passenger, due to change in air pressure!”

  • Sarah Renton, Operations:

“I was removing a nappy during a relaxing, calm and therapeutic baby massage class (as babies were to be naked) only for him to pee quite spectacularly all over the mother and baby next to me. I soon learnt that nappy freedom meant immediate urination!”

  • Josie Tennant, Merchandiser and Product Development Assistant:

“ For me it was the social shame of having a child that has found their voice and decides to scream (and I mean realllyyyy scream), in a fancy coffee shop. This was made even harder by the fact I was meant to be helping my friend with her twins, so I couldn’t get up and leave!”

  • Samantha Horn, Accounts:

“I had taken a day off work to make a birthday cake for our daughter.  Knowing her love of Tinkerbell, I had the bright idea to make her a Tinkerbell cake I’d seen on YouTube, using her Tinkerbell doll and then the cake is her skirt.  This involved making green icing (try getting green dye off your hands!) then cutting out around a hundred leaves to stick onto a dome shaped cake which I had stayed up the night before cooking.  I was so super proud of my achievement as, I have to say, it did look fab.

The big reveal of this cake with the grandparents over for a birthday tea, lots of “oohs” and “ahh” from said grandparents and husband with complete and utter silence from my daughter.  Everyone turned to her expecting a massive smile…. nope, that look of utter horror that someone has stuffed your beloved doll into a green cake, then lots of tears followed.   Bad, bad Mummy!”

Samantha's wonderful Tinkerbell cake!

  • Kelly Kay, Online Sales:

“So not a hard parenting story exactly but a humorous one all the same...as a bit of advice to Dad's, please ensure you check your baby's parts carefully before announcing the sex to your partners! When our daughter was born my husband announced she was a boy before the midwife had to correct him and explain that sometimes those parts can be a little swollen and we actually had a beautiful baby girl. He had in fact wanted another daughter so all was good in the end!”

  • Leslie Tresher, PacaPod Consultant

"I should state, for the record, that my husband is an excellent father. He and my daughter get along like two peas in a pod and their love for one another will melt your heart. However, my husband had a hard time adjusting to parenting a newborn. Like some men, they have a hard time relating to a tiny blob that is your new infant. For the first 6 weeks, I sometimes felt like I was parenting two babies: my sweet, new, infant daughter and a 35-year-old male-baby. I ended up telling him to go on an overnight surf/camping trip with his guy friends because I needed space!"
